Joyce is a young illustrator / designer who put great interest in anything related to art and design. As a Singapore-born Chinese who is strongly influenced by Western culture and media, Joyce is a creature of both worlds, and has an ardent love for folk art, mythological tales and street culture. She believes in rediscovering her heritage through the beauty of traditional Chinese art, and tries to visually express both her Chinese roots and Western influences in her creations, as well as other motifs from her home city, Singapore. Nonetheless, Joyce believes that she is still in a stage of experimentation and has yet to confine herself to a specific style. She does, however, like to blend traditional forms, such as watercolor, with digital technology. Some of her works were featured in Asia-Pacific Design Yearbook Ⅳ, Kult Magazine and Noise Singapore 2012/2011/2010 Festival Showcase Exhibition. Read Less

How would Joyce best describe her style of illustration?

Personally, I do not think I have developed and built up my own unique illustration style yet. This is something that I’m still working on. However, in my illustration I do like to mix traditional with a digital approach. Currently, the series of illustration that I’m still working on is about rising from the old to the new, from traditional to the modern, which is portrayed through the architecture, stories, all of which influence my artistic style; the use of watercolors combined with digital technology.

As Singapore-born Chinese who is largely influenced by Western culture and media, I am re-discovering the beauty of traditional Chinese art and continually searching for this elusive ìheritageî of mine. Beside my love for folk art, mythological tales and marvels of nature, the street culture spirit also fascinates me. We all carry within us our cultural memories. We are aware of what makes us different and of how our past has created who we are. Thus, in most of my artworks, I try to inject visual influences and culture from my city and Chinese art, connecting my Chinese roots and eastern tradition with the western world. Read Less
