Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows marked a first for me. The first film key art project that I was asked to work on because of my concept art/matte painting expertise and in the beginning, it was hush-hush on what it was. I was only told that it was a WB project and I already guessed HP. So here are the 3 that I did finishing on that didn't make it through the WB gauntlet. I saw all of the ones that were picked being worked on in an adjacent office. I was hoping that the ones I worked on would be chosen because I really like the HP franchise.
The first image is of the kids protecting Hogwarts from Voldemort and the Deatheaters with the knights behind them. At this point, we didn't have any of the VFX shots completed, so we didn't have any reference or renders of the stone protectors and the knights were temporarily placed there. I painted in a lot of the highlights on the faces, but I was told not to mess with the characters too much in terms of painting. Most of that was illustrating the Deatheaters and their smoke trails.
The second image is of Harry and Haggrid in the tunnel. The ADs wanted me to have the lighting on Harry very bright to bring attention to him just because of that backlight in the tunnel being so bright. I also painted a matte extension to about 1/4 of the background in the tunnel on the left, a bunch of rimlighting on the Deatheaters, etc.
The last image is when Voldemort finds where Dumbledore's burial site is and takes the Elderwand aka The Deathstick.
Even before I started that, there were discussions for me to do matte work on something called 'Game of Thrones' that was going to air on HBO and I had never heard of the series before :) I was already booked to work on key art for Sucker Punch though.
